03 Description

The Bodystik improves patient comfort and the performance of procedures.

The Bodystik whole-body plethysmograph was developed with the comfort of both patients and users in mind. A stable swing-out chair allows patients with limited mobility to comfortably enter the box. This design also makes it easier for users to assist patients with mobility impairments. The fully height-adjustable arm can be adjusted electronically via a user-friendly control panel on the outside of the cubicle, allowing small adjustments to be made even when the door is closed. This compact electronic arm helps to increase the usable interior space of the Bodystik, which increases patient comfort.

The five large tempered safety glass windows provide patients with a good view of the user during the test, increasing their comfort under test conditions. These large glass areas also help to reduce non-compliance from patients who might otherwise not enter the Bodystik box. Communication between patient and user is via an intercom system with a microphone in the control panel and speakers inside the Bodystik, allowing clear instructions to be given throughout the testing process.

The powerful BLUE CHERRY® software suite is equipped with features that support respiratory monitoring and control, allowing the operator to easily manage patients during the test. Bodystik optimises the workflow and fits seamlessly into the daily clinical routine. Whole-body plethysmography is generally recognised as the gold standard for pulmonary function testing (PFT). The Bodystik is Geratherm Respiratory’s leading PFT system and enables the measurement of respiratory resistance, lung volume including residual volume as well as comprehensive spirometry and pressure measurements during inspiration and expiration. Body plethysmography plays an important role in the differential diagnosis of obstructive and restrictive lung diseases and can make a decisive contribution to identifying the causes of dyspnoea.

Easy cabin access

The Geratherm Respiratory Bodystik appears to have a thoughtful and user-friendly design that caters to the needs of patients, especially the elderly or those with limited mobility. The cabin has been designed with an extremely low door step, which makes it easier for elderly or frail patients in particular to enter the cabin. The unique chair design swivels out 60 degrees, allowing patients to sit outside the cabin and swivel in comfortably for testing, which is particularly useful for wheelchair users.

In an effort to make the Bodystik compatible for as many patients as possible, both the chair and the measuring arm are height-adjustable, with the arm being able to be adjusted from the outside during the test without interrupting the measurements. The door is closed by means of electromagnetic locks, which can be opened from inside the cabin with a simple switch as well as from the outside, and for patient safety, the locks automatically unlock in the event of a power failure.

Optimum patient care

The Bodystik has a robust aluminium frame that guarantees reliable and precise measurements. Comfort is enhanced by ESD glazing on all sides as well as on the top, which provides a clear view of the surroundings and creates a bright, pleasant feeling of space. The transparent glazing promotes clear visual communication. This is complemented by the integrated intercom system, which enables the patient to clearly understand the user’s instructions during the test phase.

Rapid quality control

As with all Geratherm ventilators, testing and analysis is controlled by the powerful BLUE CHERRY® lung function software platform. Particular attention has been paid to the testing procedure for bodystics within BLUE CHERRY®. The software helps the user to perform a high quality test according to ATS/ERS guidelines by displaying data on parameters such as respiratory rate and exhalation time during the test manoeuvre. In addition, BLUE CHERRY® and Bodystik allow the user to create a pre-defined measurement sequence that includes repetitions or multiple attempts of certain measurements to better focus on the patient. These features, along with the available on-screen instructions, help to reduce test time and provide reliable results. Once the test is complete, BLUE CHERRY® provides a comprehensive comparison and reporting suite that allows the user to compare the results of individual tests via a results overlay and match them against the ATS/ERS acceptance criteria to ensure appropriate patient co-operation.

The Bodystik can be extended with the optional Geratherm Respiratory Difustik so that lung diffusion measurements (DLCo) can be performed with the Bodystik via the standard arm of the device. The gas supply is delivered directly to the patient via a demand valve and the integrated infrared gas analyser enables rapid diffusion measurements without moving the patient.

Additional software options enable the measurement of MIP (Maximum Inspiratory Pressure) and MEP (Maximum Expiratory Pressure). MIPs and MEPs provide important information about the respiratory drive, the respiratory muscles and the auxiliary respiratory muscles, this measurement enables the investigation of neuromuscular diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
